Creating Short-Term Sales Surges

August 08, 20233 min read

Here are some quick ideas to help you create some Big-Time Sales.

The first thing people think of when they look to create Short-Term Sales Surges is a "Big Discount". All be it effective in some cases, this article is not about that but if you did, big discounts need you to provide a believable "Reason Why." People tend to be skeptical about great deals, so it's crucial to explain why you're offering them.

For instance, you can offer this exclusive discount as a reward for your best customers' loyal support. "We're offering this only to our best customers as a reward for their support."

Alternatively, you can mention that this offer is only extended to new customers. "We're extending this offer only to new customers."

In a transparent approach, you could admit that this month is typically slow for your business, and in order to avoid laying off your talented employees, you are providing exceptional value to customers. "Frankly, this is our slowest month and to avoid laying off our great employees, we're offering you this exceptional value."

Another option is to disclose that you have received a special incentive from the factory, which you are passing on to customers as savings. "We've been given a special incentive from the factory and we're passing those savings on to you"

Lastly, if you are eager to showcase a new product, offering exceptional value can serve as a compelling enticement. "We're eager to show you our new widget and thought that offering this exceptional value would be a good enticement."

Running a sweepstakes can also generate short-term sales surges. Additionally, holding red tag sales one to two times a year can be effective in retail.

It's important to communicate your reason for the sale to customers and emphasize that the sale will be significant, with desirable items likely to sell out throughout the day.

Coupons are another effective strategy. Consider inserting them into Sunday newspapers since many people actively collect coupons during that time. You can also try implementing "double coupon" days to further incentivize customers. Sending a letter in advance to alert customers about upcoming coupons, along with a "doubling" coupon, can increase their anticipation and engagement.

Printing out fake checks made out to your store, with the customer's name in the signature area, creates a unique promotional opportunity. Additionally, sourcing premium gifts at wholesale prices, such as TVs, jewelry, or weekend getaways, from close-out warehouse catalogs or websites can attract customers.

Don't be afraid to get creative with storytelling. Sharing an engaging story, like having your accountant think you're crazy for the promotion, can add intrigue and capture people's attention.

Sports-related promotions can be effective by using sports metaphors. For example, you can run a "Triple Play" promotion where customers can buy one item and get two for free. Emphasizing the concept of 3-for-1 adds an air of exclusivity, sounding more enticing than simply saying it's 67% off. Additionally, tying these promotions to popular sports in your area can further resonate with customers.

Consider implementing trade-ins, a strategy commonly seen at car dealerships, but explore if there's a way to adapt this approach to your business.

Offering easy payment terms or financing options can also help alleviate the financial burden for some customers. Using phrases like "$100 down and 4 payments of $50" can make the purchase more manageable compared to requiring a lump sum payment of $300 upfront.

Leveraging celebrity appearances can serve as a powerful draw to specific locations, attracting a larger crowd.

Remember to maintain a friendly tone throughout your communication to engage and connect with customers effectively.
